The Gladstone Axe is a whisky from the portfolio of Biggar & Leith, a New Jersey-based importer and distributor of food and spirits.
Its patron is William Gladstone, a British politician, four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Elwyn Gladstone, founder of Biggar & Leith is his great-great-grandson). After ending his political career, William Gladstone's hobby was felling trees; he was often seen with an axe on the family estate in Hawarden. The Gladstone Axe debuted in 2021 in two versions, the American Oak presented here described as "Smooth and Rich" is a blended malt made from 14 distillates from Islay and the Highlands aged in bourbon barrels.
Nose: barley malt, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, green apples, orange peel, hay and a distant hint of smoke.
Palate: brown sugar, vanilla, white chocolate, milkshake, butter cookies, stewed apples and a hint of coconut flakes.
Finish : medium long, with notes of vanilla, toffee, apples, white pepper, oak and a fading trace of smoke.
