Yamazakura is a blended whisky brand from the portfolio of Sasanokawa Shuzo, a producer of alcoholic beverages since 1765.
The company is one of the key players in the sake and shōchu market, whisky plays a minor role in its offer, although it offers both standard blends and more expensive single cask editions. The name Yamazakura translates from Japanese to "Mountain (Yama) of Blossoming Cherry Blossoms (sakura)". The whisky presented here is, according to the producer, a blend of four single malts and a single grain whisky. Sasanokawa does not reveal where the ingredients come from, we know that it previously used Scottish whiskies in its blends. Its own distillery, Asaka, was established only in 2015.
Aroma: light, spring meadow, roasted grain, buttered toast, vanilla, lemongrass, salted peanuts and a pinch of pepper.
Palate: slightly alcoholic, breakfast cereal, vanilla, brown sugar, butter biscuits, pepper and fresh oak.
Finish: not too long, with notes of vanilla, pepper, green peppers and oak.
