Product description
The Nikka Super debuted in October 1962 and was the company's most expensive product. It retailed for 3,000 yen, while a college graduate's starting salary was 18,000 yen per month.
The whisky was presented in a handcrafted bottle with a glass stopper and only 1,000 bottles were released per year. Little is known about the original formula, as in 1962 Nikka had only one distillery, Yoichi (Nishinomiya began distilling in 1964, and Sendai, or today's Miyagikyo, five years later). Today's Nikka Super Rare Old is a premium blend with a large proportion of malt whisky from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, possibly also from Ben Nevis. It is presented in a bottle similar in shape to the original.
Nose: light, vanilla, toffee, honey, bananas, forest berries, walnuts, sweet spices, a touch of coconut flakes and a distant hint of smoke.
Palate: subtle sherry notes, vanilla cream, lemon tart, honeydew melon, buttered toast, a pinch of white pepper and some oak.
Finish : not too long, with notes of vanilla, caramel, ripe fruit, a bit of tobacco and oak.
