Old Bardstown is part of Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (better known as Willett) brand portfolio. Willet Distillery resumed distillation in 2012 and Old Bardstown is certainly sourced bourbon, most likely form Heaven Hill Distillery. The brand name pays homage to a racehorse from the 1950s named after the city of Bardstown. According to Willett’s website in 31 career starts Bardstown had 18 first place finishes, 7 second place finishes and 1 third place finish. The bay gelding had total earnings of $628,725, a significant amount of money for the 1950s. The whiskey is bottled at 101 US Proof (50.5% abv).
Nose: vanilla, caramel, cornflakes, prunes, dried cranberries, hard candy, hints of pepper and allspice and toasted oak.
Palate: fruity with delicate earthy notes, black cherries, prunes, bitter orange marmalade, toasted rye bread, dash of pepper and oak.
Finish: pretty long, oaky, with notes of caramel, pepper and fresh herbs.
