The original Port Charlotte Distillery was funded by Colin Campbell in 1829 while the village of Port Charlotte was built by Walter Frederick Campbell, the Laird of Islay, to house distillery workers.
The distillery ceased operations in 1929 but the brand was resurrected by the Bruichladdich Distillery owners and re-launched in 2006. Port Charlotte 10 years old debuted in June 2018 as permanent addition to the range. The whisky was distilled from 100% Scottish barley from Inverness-shire region malted to specification of 40ppm phenols and aged in first fill American oak casks (65%), second fill American oak casks (10%) and second fill French wine casks from Bordeaux (25%). Bottled of natural color and without chill-filtration at 50% abv.
Nose: smoky, earthy and medicinal, vanilla custard, crème brûlée, hints of lemon and orange peel, ginger, nutmeg, thyme and a whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: slightly oily, smoky and fruity, oranges, mango, honeydew melon, vanilla, honey, coconut flakes, smoked oysters, dash of pepper and slight saline tang.
Finish: long, with notes of tropical fruit, vanilla, white pepper and peat smoke
