Lagavulin is the undisputed jewel in Diageo's crown. The distillery has been using its full potential for years, which translates into 2.5 million liters of alcohol per year.
While in the past Lagavulin was used in Johnnie Walker and White Horse blends , today 98% of production is bottled as single malt . The basic offer includes only 3 items: 12 years old Cask Strength, 16 years old and Distiller's Edition, although from time to time Diageo also tempts us with a limited edition. In 2012, Lagavulin 21 years old appeared in the prestigious Special Releases series . It was a whisky distilled in 1991, aged exclusively in sherry barrels from European oak and offered in the cask strength version (52% abv). The edition consisted of 2772 bottles.
Aroma: smoky and peaty with delicate notes of sherry, dried plums and dates, raisins, a bit of pepper and cardamom, leather, tobacco, traces of iodine and camphor.
Palate: dry and rather spicy, pepper, ginger, licorice, oak, tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, almonds, a handful of herbs from the garden, peat smoke, a trace of tar and delicate mineral notes.
Finish : long, spicy and nutty with notes of cocoa, tobacco and a cloud of peat smoke.
