This is one of the rarest Port Ellen whisky releases. The distillery is the most popular closed distillery in the world.
It was located in the town of Port Ellen in the south of the Isle of Islay, and its work ended in 1983. Today, there is a huge modern malthouse on the distillery site. This version is the third release in the famous limited edition Port Ellen series, released annually since 2001. The whisky was distilled in 1979. Traditional oak barrels were used to age the distillates. After 24 years of maturation, it was bottled at a natural strength of 57.3%. It was released in 2003 in a run of 9,000 bottles.
Nose: thick and heavy with a powerful peat and notes of smoke, vanilla, oatmeal, seaweed, wet grass, barley malt, medicine and ink
Taste: oily and strong with tones of peat, burnt oak, sea salt, smoked fish, malt, soot, iodine, vanilla and citrus
Finish: very long and intense with notes of cigar smoke and ash
