Midleton Very Rare was introduced in 1984 as part of Duty Free range and was the first Irish super premium blended whiskey. The early bottlings contained spirit distilled in the original Old Midleton Distillery, which ceased operations in 1975. Middleton Very Rare is a single pot still heavy blend with very little grain content, aged predominantly in fresh ex-bourbon casks with very little addition of ex-sherry casks. Barry Crockett, the Midleton Distillery master distiller, personally selects casks for each batch. The whiskey is bottled without age statement (the company claims that each batch comprises whiskeys aged from 12 to 25 years) at 40% abv with label indicating the year of release. The 2007 release scored double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
