In November 1999, Edrington Group purchased the assets of Highland Distillers for £601 million.
The contract included the Macallan and Highland Park distilleries, as well as the rights to Famous Grouse, the most popular blend in its native Scotland since the 1980s. In the following years, Edrington introduced a dozen or so new versions of Famous Grouse, the vast majority of which received rave reviews. Black Grouse debuted in 2006 and was immediately added to the core range. In 2015, it was replaced by Smoky Black, whose formula was enriched by a smoky and peated version of the single malt Glenturret.
