Chichibu is the first Japanese whisky distillery opened in the new century (2008).
Its owner is Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the founder of Hanyu Distillery, which operated from 1946 to 2000. Chichibu is equipped with two small stills, eight fermentation tanks made of Japanese Mizunara oak and a mash tun, where the mash is stirred with a paddle. Its production capacity is a modest 60,000 liters of distillate per year. Chichibu produces whiskies of various profiles, and its supply covers only a fraction of demand. The Ichiro's Malt MWR presented here is a blended malt whisky, a blend of Chichibu and Hanyu single malts and a small amount of Scotch finished in barrels of Japanese Mizunara oak.
Aroma: fruity, oranges, nectarines, cantaloupe, spring meadow, sweet bread, honey, a touch of ginger and white pepper and notes of sandalwood.
Palate: soft, brown sugar, vanilla, honey, oranges, apricots, cantaloupe. white pepper, allspice and subtle oak bitterness.
Finish: medium long, with notes of sweet yeast dough, vanilla, raisins, orange peel, white pepper and oak.
