Togouchi is a whisky from the portfolio of Chugoku Jozo, a company based in the suburb of Hiroshima.
The company has been operating since 1918 and specializes in sake and shōchu, Togouchi whisky debuted in 2003. For a dozen or so years, blends made from Scottish and Canadian distillates were released under the Togouchi brand, additionally aged in a 361 m long abandoned railway tunnel, where the climate conditions are said to be ideal - 15º C and 80% humidity. On the hundredth anniversary of its founding, the company began distilling in its own Sakurao distillery near Hiroshima and in July 2021, the local single malt debuted. It hits the market in two versions - Sakurao, aged in a warehouse on the distillery premises, and Togouchi, aged in the aforementioned tunnel.
Aroma : barley malt, apples, apricots, figs, vanilla, caramel, toffee, notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and oak.
Taste : apples, pears, dried dates and figs, sweet breakfast cereals, vanilla, milk fudge, a bit of cinnamon and pepper.
Finish : medium long, with notes of sweet dried fruit, vanilla, caramel, white pepper and a trace of oak tannins.
