Product description
Matsui Shuzo was founded in 1910 in Tottori Prefecture in southwestern Honshu at the foot of Mount Daisen.
It is part of Matsui Breweries, a producer of sake and shōchu. In 2017, the company installed stills and began distilling whisky as Kurayoshi Distillery (its production capacity is about 75,000 liters per year). The company's hallmark today is the single malt whisky line "The Matsui" offered in three versions, each with an original label depicting works by Japanese artists:
The Matsui The Peated (48% abv) distilled from malted barley with peat and aged in American oak barrels; one of the top twenty single malts in the "Whisky of the Year 2019" poll;
The Matsui Sakura Cask (48% abv) one of the few (perhaps the only) whiskies aged in Japanese cherry barrels;
The Matsui Mizunara Cask (43% abv) aged in Japanese Mizunara oak barrels, voted the best Japanese single malt by Jim Murray in his "Whisky Bible 2020".
