Akkeshi Distillery is an investment by Tokyo-based company Kenten Jisuguyo, which deals, among other things, in the distribution of alcoholic beverages.
The distillery is located on the island of Hokkaido, in a remote area covered by marshes and peat bogs, while the local climate is similar to the climate of the island of Islay. The plant is equipped with two Scotch stills and can produce 300,000 liters of distillate per year. Akkeshi began distilling in October 2016, its first single malt whisky Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy (Japanese crane in the local language) debuted in February 2020. The whisky was distilled from barley malted with local peat and aged in bourbon, sherry, red wine and Mizunara oak barrels. In the year of its release, it won a double gold medal at the World Spirit Competition in San Francisco.
Nose: slightly peaty, barley malt, crème brûlée, blackberries, raspberries, rosehip jam, buttered toast, roasted chestnuts and a hint of oak.
Palate: cherries, strawberries, raspberry mousse, orange peel, milk chocolate, toffee, honey, white pepper and a hint of smoke in the background.
Finish: medium long, smoky, with notes of milk chocolate, honey, vanilla, white pepper, orange peel and a trace of smoke.
