In September 2012, Jack Daniel's Distillery launched the Master Distillers Series, honoring the seven master distillers who have held this position from the distillery's founding to the present day.
The fourth on their list, and the first unrelated to Jack Daniel, is Jess Gamble, to whom this edition is dedicated. Jess was hired to work at the distillery by Reagor Motlow in 1948 as a worker. His diligence, loyalty and perseverance led him up the ladder of his career to the very top. In the late 1950s, the then master distiller Lem Tolley announced his retirement and Reagor Motlow intended to entrust this position to Frank Bobo. However, Lem remained in the position until 1964, and Reagor decided to promote Jess Gamble, as a reward for his dedication to the company. Jess was the shortest-serving master distiller in the history of Jack Daniel's Distillery, retiring just two years later, and his duties were taken over by Frank Bobo. After retirement, Jess Gamble remained in Lynchburg, but he broke away from the profession and did not appear at the distillery. He was a very modest man, a lifelong non-drinker, and remained so until his death in 1988. He died at the age of 86.
