The story of Plantation rums is strictly connected with the French company Maison Ferrand, founded by Alexandre Gabriel in 1989.
His aim was to preserve the time-honoured artisanal methods of spirits production, at the same time introducing some innovations. Maison Ferrand started with the production of Ferrand Cognac. In 1996 a French gin was introduced, and its manufacture made use of the traditional pot stills while they were not engaged in cognac distillation. In 1999 Plantation rum was introduced. The idea behind the brand was to allow the rums to mature in ex-bourbon barrels in the tropics, and then mature them further in France, in French oak barrels that have been used to mature fine French cognac. This second stage of maturation takes place at Château de Bonbonnet in France. The year 2017 brought the acquisition of West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and a third of the renowned National Rums of Jamaica, which owns Clarendon, Long Pond and Inswood distilleries.
Plantation Rum Trinidad 2009 Duvel Barrel Aged is a rum made from molasses, manufactured at Trinidad Distillers Limited, distilled in a column still. It matured for 10 years in the tropics of Trinidad, in ex-bourbon barrels, after which it was transferred to France and filled into Ferrand ex-cognac barrels. For the final 11 months of maturation, it was filled into a single barrels that previousl held Belgian Duvel beer.
