In the summer of 2018 Brown-Forman Corporation introduced new Jack Daniel’s range, Legacy Edition Series.
Jeff Arnett, Jack Daniel’s master distiller, said: “everyone recognizes Jack’s trademark black label but very few realize that the Jack Daniel’s label has undergone many variations over the years, most of which looked very different from the one we know today”.
The initial edition of the Legacy Series was labeled green, the color, which the company used before 1904 (the year Jack Daniel’s whiskey was awarded with its first gold medal at the Saint Louis Whiskey Fair).
The second edition (May, 2019) brings us further into the 20th Century, when for the first time Jack Daniel’s whiskey label has black background. The label features a rope and anchor to symbolize Jack’s unmoving confidence and three stars which have been added to honor the distillery’s home state of Tennessee (the three stars represent the divisions of Tennessee into middle, east and west). The label that inspired Edition 2 featured words “for medicinal use only” (by 1907 the sale of alcohol was prohibited throughout most of Tennessee); surely such statement does not feature on the current label.
