Evan Williams debuted in 1957 at Heaven Hill Distillery, more than 20 years after its inception. Its formula lists 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley. Originally bottled as a 7-year-old, it was released several years ago without an age statement;
according to a company spokesman, its age limit today is 5 to 7 years. The bourbon is named after Evan Williams, Kentucky's first commercial distiller, whose distillery was in operation in 1783, 9 years before Kentucky became the 15th state in the Union.
Nose : vanilla, caramel, black cherries, plums, red apples, licorice, cornflakes, a touch of pepper and charred oak.
Palate: mild, caramel, vanilla, burnt toast, prunes, cocoa powder, pepper, cinnamon and oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of caramel, dark dried fruits, pepper and oak.
