Beinn Dubh is the name given to the highest peak in the Cairngorm range by Professor Norman Collie, who climbed it alone in 1891, and translates from Gaelic to “Black Mountain”; the owners of Speyside Distillery, in turn, have given the essence of the black mountain in the form of whisky. The spirit itself, after a basic maturation in oak barrels, was finished in freshly toasted port barrels from the Douro Valley. Speyside Distillery first distilled in 1990. It is a small distillery, equipped with a single pair of stills, produces 600,000 litres of distillate per year.
