The Barnards, a family of merchants and traders, settled down on the island of Saint Lucia in the mid-19th century. One of the occupations they took up there was sugar cane cultivation. It took three generations, however, before 21-year-old Denis Barnard came up with the idea to use the cane for rum production. Dennery Distillery was born, and the young entrepreneur embarked on his journey into the art of blending spirits from various types of stills operating there. His work became an inspiration for his son, Laurie Barnard, who decided to take a step even further and keep maturing the rums in oak barrels even after blending. As a result, he got an unusually smooth, high-quality tipple with a very complex character, now considered a benchmark for Saint Lucia’s rums. And sort of by the way, the Chairman’s Choice rum selection was born.
Chairman’s Reserve 2011 Master’s Selection for Dom Whisky is one of two rum expressions created at Saint Lucia Distillers, specially selected and bottled for Dom Whisky. It is a spirit distilled in a column still, the so-called Coffey still, a vessel for continuous distillation operating at the distillery. The rum left the still in 2011 and was filled into a single barrel, in which it matured for 9 years. The contents of the barrel was enough to fill 406 individually numbered bottles.
