Akashi whisky is a product of Eigashima Distillery founded in 1888 to produce sake; in 1919 the company obtained license to produce whisky but it took more than four decades to get started.
The current distillery was built in 1984 and has been producing whisky for a few months a year while the main source of revenue being sake and shōchu. Tokinoka Black, launched 2017, is a blended whisky created by Akito Ueda, White Oak Distillery master blender. It is made from 50% malt whisky and 50% grain whisky and matured in three types of casks – ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and new oak barrels.
Nose: sweet pastries, honey, vanilla, caramel, baked apples, plums, apricots and toasted oak.
Palate: sweet and smooth, vanilla cream, oranges, bananas, hints of cinnamon and coconut flakes and toasted oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of citrus, toffee, vanilla, sweet spice and delicate oaky dryness.
