Product description
The Depaz brand was created on the estate of the first governor of Martinique, Jacques Duparquet, on a farm founded in 1651.
Initially, they grew tobacco, legumes and raised animals, but eventually switched to growing sugar cane and soon began producing rum. The estate gave rise to the town of Saint Pierre, which eventually became the world's most important port for the transport of rum. However, on May 8, 1902, Mount Pelée, on whose slopes the estate was located, erupted. The town of Saint Pierre ceased to exist. Victor Depaz, a member of one of the families involved in growing sugar cane and making rum in Martinique, who was then receiving his education in France, returned to the island and decided to start working on growing sugar cane and making rum once again. This happened in 1917, 15 years after the tragic volcanic eruption. Today, the Depaz distillery is still one of the smallest production plants in Martinique. This is a unique plant because to this day the mills used to grind sugar cane are powered by an old, traditional steam engine. Distillation takes place in column stills, and the traditional raw material from which rum is made is fresh sugar cane juice.
Depaz Reserve Speciale VSOP is a unique blend of distillates matured for at least 7 years in small oak barrels.
