In 1886, the Locher family built the Appenzell brewery in the Swiss Alps.
In 1999, after the federal law banning distilling from grains was repealed, the Lochers began producing whiskey based primarily on locally grown barley, which, exposed to extreme mountain conditions, is characterized by great vitality. The 19th edition of Alpstein is a whiskey aged for about four years in its own beer barrels and finished for another three years in sherry barrels. The whiskey, bottled at 48% ABV, went on sale on May 16, 2022 in a limited edition of 2,200 half-liter bottles.
Nose: caramel, toffee, raisins, prunes, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, nutmeg, traces of hops and sherry-soaked oak.
Palate: vanilla, honey toast, caramel, multi-berry jam, roasted nuts and almonds, mocha, cinnamon, black pepper and oak.
Finish : medium long, with notes of sherry, dark berries, honey, chocolate, black pepper and oak.
