Frysk Hynder (Frisian Horse), the first Dutch single malt whisky was introduced in 2005.
The whisky is distilled by Aart van der Linden at Us Heit (Our Dad) distillery located in Bolsward at the site of the beer brewery; whisky distillation started in 2002. Us Heit is a very small operation with annual production of roughly 10,000 bottles. The distillery uses locally grown barley and malting is done on site. Various types of casks are used for maturation including ex-red wine, ex-sherry, ex-cognac and ex-port. Frysk Hynder presented here was distilled on March 23, 2015 and aged in ex-port cask no. 113P1, for over seven years. The whisky was bottled at 48% abv on May 27, 2022.
Nose: caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, strawberries, Damson jam, banana bread, chocolate bar, and a touch of clove.
Palate: raisins, prunes, cherries, orange peel, honey, toffee, caramel, nutmeg, cinnamon, touch of leather and oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of caramel, sweet pastries, plums, cherries, chocolate, allspice, and oak.
