Product description
Cape Fynbos Gin is a brainchild of Johan du Toit and Oliver Kirsten, who founded Grape Grinder Company in the beautiful Paarl Valley, in 2010.
Their mission was to revolutionize the South African wine scene with innovation and design. The name ‘Fynbos’ comes from the Dutch ‘fijnbosch’, which means fine-leaved bush. It is a family of low-growing plants found exclusively across South Africa’s western and eastern cape. The base of Cape Fynbos gin is quadruple distilled white grape spirt, which is then infused with juniper berries and over 30 indigenous botanicals, hand-harvested for their bark, roots, berries, flowers, stems, peels or leaves. The full range of botanicals is not disclosed but the unique bottle and packaging reveals a few of them, such as arctotis, leucospermum, ruschia, osteosperum, stebe, Leucadendron, felicia and sparaxis (unfortunately, we are not really familiar with any of them). Some of the botanicals are macerated and some vapor infused to extract maximum flavor. It is hard to believe, but today more than 300 gin brands are registered in South Africa, second only to the UK.
Cape Fynbos is a very herbal gin however it is pretty hard to pinpoint each component; juniper, wild flowers, forest floor, orange peel and hints of pepper and clove are certainly there. We recommend trying it neat or with club soda, or perhaps with Elderflower Tonic.
