Tomintoul Distillery, owned by private company Angus Dundee plc, is one of several distilleries located in Highlands and Speyside, experimenting lately with peated whisky production.
(Benromach, Tomatin, Glen Moray or Glenturret are other examples). Tomintoul has been producing batches of peated spirit on annual bases since the turn of the Century. In 2005 the Old Ballantruan brand was introduced, young whisky distilled from barley malted to phenols specification of 30ppm; Tomintoul With a Peaty Tang followed in the late 2007. The 15 years old, the oldest expression of Peaty Tang to date, was launched in the early 2018 and immediately scored silver medal at the International Spirit Competition.
Nose: heather, hay, forest floor, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, roasted peanuts, lemon peel, dash of pepper and charred oak and distant whiffs of smoke.
Palate: pleasantly smoky, breakfast cereals, burnt buttered toast, vanilla, toffee, honey-roasted nuts, pepper, dried herbs and oak.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of sweet cereals, vanilla, brown sugar, mixed spice, hints of hay and charred oak.
