Product description
Tomatin Distillery is based in Inverness-shire (Highlands), in the village with which it shares its name.
Its 120-year history has been one of ups and downs. It started in 1897 with a single pair of stills, and its huge expansion from the 1950s to the 1970s made it the largest single malt distillery in Scotland, capable of distilling 12 million litres of alcohol per year. This potential was never fully exploited, and a crisis in the industry led to the bankruptcy of the owners in 1985. The Japanese companies, Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co, who took over the distillery, reduced its distilling capacity by more than half, although annual production is still around 2 million litres of distillate per year. After Okura & Co. went bankrupt in 1998, Takara Shuzo has been the sole owner of Tomatina.
The whisky presented here was distilled in March 1986, just after the distillery was taken over by Japanese capital, and bottled at cask strength 56.7% abv on 19 October 2010 by John Murray & Co. in an edition of 601 bottles. John Murray & Co. was founded in 1982 by the Bartholomew family on the Isle of Mull. In 1996 the company moved to Perth and in 2005 its assets were taken over by Morrison & MacKay Ltd.
