The North Port Distillery, based in the town of Brechin in the eastern Highlands, began operation in 1820 as the Townhead Distillery (it adopted the name North Port in 1839).
The plant became part of DCL in 1922 and equipped with a single pair of stills, it produced for the needs of the group's blends . Despite modernization in the 1970s, North Port suspended operations in 1983 and never resumed. Over the next decade, the buildings were razed to the ground and the plot is now occupied by a supermarket and a car park. North Port was included in the prestigious Rare Malts series three times, the last time in October 1999. It was a 20-year-old whisky, distilled in 1979 and bottled in cask strength (61.2% abv).
Aroma : grassy, herbal and slightly fruity, pine resin, pencil shavings, apples, plums, a trace of pepper and oak.
Palate: malty and grassy, breakfast cereal, cotton candy, canned pineapple, pepper, ginger and oak.
Finish: long and dry, garden herbs, pepper and oak.
