North Port Distillery was licensed in 1823, although it had been producing whisky for at least three years before that.
Initially known as Townhead Distillery, it changed its name to Brechin in 1832 and then to North Port seven years later (the latter referring to the northern gate of the walled town of Brechin). The distillery had a single pair of stills and produced around 750,000 litres of spirit per year. It last distilled in 1983 and within a decade the buildings were razed to the ground and now there is a supermarket and car park on its site. Brechin 28 years old is the first official release of this whisky, bottled over 20 years after the last distillation. The whisky was offered in cask strength (53.3% abv) in an edition of 2040 bottles.
