Product description
Southern Comfort, known as SoCo, is an American liqueur based on fruit, spices, and whiskey.
Southern Comfort in its original version had a whiskey base, to which vanilla, lemon, cinnamon, cloves, cherries and oranges were added. After the maturation process, Martin Heron sweetened the mixture with honey. At that time, the drink was called "Cuffs and Buttons". Over the years, the recipe was modified: the whiskey was replaced with a neutral spirit with a touch of whiskey and fruit concentrate (mainly apricot), which simplified the taste and reduced production costs.
In 1874, in the heart of New Orleans, it was created by Martin Wilkes Heron, considered the father of mixology. Heron worked in a bar located near the famous Bourbon Street, where customers often complained about the unpleasant taste of young, low-quality whiskey. As an enterprising and inventive person, Heron decided to improve the taste of the drink by adding fruits, spices and honey, which resulted in the creation of a unique liqueur.
Southern Comfort in Culture:
The first film reference to the liqueur was Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind in 1939, who appeared on screen with the liqueur in a glass. Also, one of the first SoCo-based cocktails was the "Scarlett O'Hara", which consists of Southern Comfort liqueur, cranberry juice and fresh lime.
