United Distillers, the previous incarnation of Diageo, introduced Rare Malts in 1995 following the success of its Classic Malts and Flora & Fauna series .
Initially Rare Malts offered whiskies from closed distilleries, but due to very limited supplies they were soon joined by single malts from the group's remaining distilleries. Glen Mhor 1976, bottled 2005, is an edition consisting of 6,000 bottles. The whisky was aged in bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at natural alcohol content (51.9%) without chill filtration. 2005 was the last year for the Rare Malts series .
