In the early spring of 2020 Chivas Bros. announced launch of the Chivas Extra 13 Collection, a range of four 13 years old blended whiskies that deliver extra flavor thanks to employing four various casks during the whisky-making process: Oloroso Sherry, American Rye Whiskey, Rum and Tequila. The collection is inspired by founding brothers, John and James Chivas, who imported exotic spices, premium spirits and food items and produced own blended whisky. The base of their operations was located at 13 King Street, Aberdeen. The whisky presented here was “selectively matured in Oloroso Sherry casks”, what probably means that part of each batch was finished in first fill ex-Oloroso sherry butts.
Nose: initially a little restrained, then opens up with apples, pears and honeydew melon; more sherry notes, raisins, caramel, nougat, milk chocolate, hints of cinnamon and candied ginger.
Palate: sweet, caramel, vanilla, sugared nuts and almonds, maple syrup, chocolate-coated raisins, pears, nectarines, touch of pipe tobacco and fading hint of smoke.
Finish: fairly long and sweet, with notes of caramel, milk chocolate, roasted nuts and dash of mixed spice and oak.
