- One day in 1962, a young man took a job at Balvenie Distillery.
Product description
One day, in the year of our Lord 1962, a young man was hired to work at Balvenie Distillery.
Few would have guessed that this young man would grow into a legendary maltmaster whose career would span six decades, and whose incredibly broad knowledge and immense creativity would attract the attention of whisky connoisseurs from all over the world. David Stewart, because he is the one we are talking about, is the person who has worked in this position the longest, and to him is the edition presented here dedicated. The drink comes from a hogshead cask (European oak) filled in 1962 and bottled in just 71 bottles in 2023 (ours is number 43). On the bottle, next to the master's autograph, there is also (for the first time) the signature of Kelsey McKechnie , who in 2018, at the age of just 26, became the journeyman maltmaster and assistant to the master. The presentation of the whisky is equally unique, using glass, gold and brass and featuring episodes from David Stewart’s career. Needless to say, this is the oldest release from the distillery. (Tasting note by Master Kelsey McKechnie.)
In the aromatic bouquet we discover a mesmerizing range of autumn aromas - lavender, heather, mosses and ferns.
In the taste , intense toffee notes, freshly roasted coffee beans and perfectly integrated oak. The evolution of flavors continues, constantly interrupted by an explosion of cloves and nutmeg, and in the extremely long finish leads to an unresolved duel between charred oak and candied orange.
