Product description
Springbank 21 years was part of the company's offering in the 1980s and 1990s, disappeared in 2002 and returned in 2011 (the distillery did not distill between 1979 and 1989).
The edition presented here is, we believe, from the 1990s and is bottled in stylish ceramic jugs (similar limited editions had been on the market since the early 1970s). At the time, single malt whisky was experiencing a fraction of its current popularity and it was common for producers to add older spirits to editions with a lower age statement. We know that Springbank had a similar policy, but we don’t know what percentage of whisky older than 21 years is in the jug presented here.
Nose: rich and elegant, dried apricots and figs, roasted chestnuts, vanilla, marzipan, candied orange peel, a pinch of salt, a drop of engine oil and a distant note of peat smoke.
Taste: beautifully balanced, delicate notes of sherry, raisins, milk chocolate, dried figs, nutmeg, cinnamon, licorice, traces of peat and dried mushrooms and a light bitterness of oak.
Finish: long, with notes of salty breeze, citrus, black pepper, nutmeg, oak and peat smoke in the background.
