Product description
Until the mid-1970s, it was customary on British Royal Navy ships to issue sailors a daily ration of rum.
Rum was given out by the ship's steward, known in English as a "purser", or "pusser". This custom was abandoned on 31 July 1970, and this day went down in the black pages of the British fleet as Black Tot Day. Before the invention and widespread use of the hydrometer, used to test alcohol content, the strength of rum was tested by trying to ignite gunpowder soaked in it. If the powder burned, it meant that the rum was strong enough. If not, it was considered too diluted and unfit for consumption. The minimum strength of rum at which the powder would ignite was defined as "gunpowder strength", or "gunpowder proof". Later hydrometer tests established this strength at 54.5% vol.
The rum comes from Guyana, where it is made from molasses. Pusser's Rum Gunpowder Proof Spiced is a spiced version of Pusser's rum with traditional "gunpowder" strength. The spices used here include cinnamon, ginger, chocolate, vanilla and bananas. It replaced the Pusser's Spiced version on the market, previously offered as a 35% ABV spirit.
