Product description
Cardhu Distillery is based in the heart of Speyside, in the village of Knockando.
Officially registered in 1824 by John Cumming, in 1893 it was purchased by John Walker & Sons and has been closely associated with Johnnie Walker blends ever since. In 1908 the distillery changed its name to Cardow, returning to its original name in 1981. In 1963 Glenfiddich became the first single malt whisky to experience wide distribution outside Scotland, and two years later the board of DCL, then the largest whisky producer, decided on a similar strategy for Cardow. The whisky presented here, distilled in 1962, two years after the installation of an additional pair of stills, is a proposal from Wm Cadenhead Ltd. in 1979.
Wm Cadenhead Ltd. is Scotland's oldest Independent Bottler, founded in 1842 in Aberdeen by George Duncan. His brother-in-law, William Cadenhead (a poet, by the way) joined in 1858, and after Duncan's death, he christened the company with his own name. In 1972, Wm Cadenhead Ltd. was bought at auction by the owner of Springbank, J. & A. Mitchell & Co., who moved its headquarters to Campbeltown. In addition to a wide range of Scotch whiskies, Wm Cadenhead Ltd. also offers rums, gins and bourbons.
