Product description
Bowmore has been producing whisky since 1779, making it the oldest distillery on Islay.
It’s also one of a handful that still malts barley, although its own malt covers about 30% of its needs. The distillery has been owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers since 1963, before being acquired by Japanese conglomerate Suntory in 1994. Bowmore 21 Year was part of the company’s core range for more than a quarter of a century, winning a number of medals and accolades, including a gold medal at the 1992 International Wine & Spirit Competition. It was withdrawn from sale early in the new century and has become increasingly difficult to find. The one on display here is the rare 1973 Vintage, a whisky aged in sherry casks for more than two decades and bottled in the mid-1990s.
Nose: very elegant, lots of sherry and fruit, bitter orange, mango, cantaloupe, cloves, some tobacco and leather and delicate peat smoke in the background.
Taste : rich, fruity, oranges, tangerines, mango, fresh herbs, a dash of salt and pepper, a hint of leather, oak and a whiff of peat smoke.
Finish : long, a combination of tropical fruits, garden herbs, sea salt and peat smoke.
