Port Ellen Distillery is, alongside Brora, the most lamented victim of the whisky market crisis of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The distillery operated from 1825-1929 and from 1967-1983, and at the time of its closure was the smallest of DCL's three plants on Islay. Port Ellen has a cult following in the new century, and Diageo's press release about rebuilding and resuming production has caused understandable excitement. The company does not reveal how many Port Ellen casks it still has in stock, and while it seemed that the 2018 edition of "Untold Stories" would be the "last official" 2020 brought 9 Rogue Casks. This is the second part of "Untold Stories" containing whisky distilled in 1979 and aged in 9 casks (4 hogshead barrels, American oak and 5 butt barrels, European oak). We have heard that the whisky aged in them deviates from the Port Ellen profile and was previously rejected by the company's blending masters. The edition consisted of 1,380 bottles.
