FEW Spirits has been operating since 2011, founded by Paul Hletko, previously a patent law specialist.
This micro-distillery is based in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Evanston is home to the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which maintained local prohibition from 1855 to 1972. Ironically, the distillery's name is based on the initials of Frances Elizabeth Wilard, a temperance crusade leader and former president of the organization that moved its headquarters to Evanston. FEW American gin is distilled from a "white dog" base (70% corn, 20% wheat, 10% malted barley) with 11 botanicals, including juniper berries, coriander, lemon and orange peel, vanilla pod, cassia bark, grains of paradise, angelica root, lavender, and hops. The “breakfast” version presented here (Breakfast gin), a creation of company manager Steven Kaplan, debuted in 2015. Its formula also includes Earl Grey tea, of which Mr. Kaplan is an ardent fan.
FEW Breakfast Gin is a drink with a palette dominated by bergamot and juniper berries; in the background we find citrus and coriander. Despite the name, we do not recommend it as a substitute for morning coffee or orange juice, but it tastes great in a French 75 cocktail.
