Currach Whiskey was launched by Origin Spirits Ireland Ltd in the early 2020.
The company was founded in 2013 and produces Kalak Single Malt Vodka and Ornabrak Single Malt Gin. The initial release comprised triple distilled whiskey sourced probably form West Cork Distillers, aged in American oak casks for about four years, then finished in Atlantic kombu seaweed charred virgin oak casks for three to four months. The following year Origin Spirits introduced the second whiskey expression, triple distilled single malt finished in Atlantic wakame seaweed charred casks. While kombu is a brown seaweed varietal, wakame, green varietal, is commonly used in salads, soups and snacks in Japanese and other Asian cuisines.
Nose: sea salt, iodine, wet sand and sea shells, rye crackers, salted caramel, grilled vegetables, hints of cocoa powder and moist wood.
Palate: seaweed salad, black pepper, salted caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, green tea, hints of iodine and whiffs of sea breeze.
Finish: medium long, salty and sweet, with notes of umami, seaweed salad, salted peanuts and licorice.
