Ararat brandy has been produced since 1887, originally by the Yerevan Brandy Co. (founded by Nerses Tairyan and Vasily Tayrov), and in the 21st century by the Ararat Brandy Co. (in 1999, Pernod Ricard purchased the Yerevan Brandy Company for $30 million).
According to the regulations, Ararat brandy can only be distilled from locally grown grape varieties, the main ones being Voskehta, Garan Dmak, Mskhali, Kangun and Rkatsiteli. Armenia has excellent conditions for growing grapes, the best grapes come from the Ararat Valley, located at the foot of Mount Ararat. Ararat Vaspurakan is the premium version of this brandy. Its name refers to the ancient principality of Vaspurakan located in the area of today's eastern Turkey and northwestern Iran. This brandy is aged for at least 15 years in barrels made of Armenian oak (Quercus pontica).
Nose: rich, freshly roasted coffee beans, dried apricots and figs, raisins, toffee, milk chocolate, walnuts, cinnamon, cloves, notes of vanilla and oak.
Palate: complex, roasted nuts, dried apricots, blood oranges, plums, marzipan, milk chocolate, coffee, caramel, cinnamon, allspice and oak.
Finish: quite long, mild, with notes of dried fruit, roasted nuts, cloves, chocolate and oak.
