The history of the brand dates back to 1715, when 21-year-old Jean Martell came to the Charentes region from Jersey to try his luck in the eaux-de-vie trade. After the death of his first wife, he immediately married Rachel Lalemand, heiress to a distinguished cognac family. At the time of Martell's death (1753), his name was synonymous with quality. Since 2001, the brand has been owned by the French corporation Pernod Ricard. Martell Noblige (meaning "Nobility obliges") is a cognac whose heart is eaux-de-vie from the Les Borderies growing district. Its components are aged for 10 years or more.
