With global sales of 5.6 million cases (2021), Tanqueray ranks second on the list of most popular gins (first is Gordon's, 7.4 million cases). Tanqueray gin, the creation of Charles Tanqueray, debuted in 1830. Its formula listed just four botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seed, angelica root and licorice, although it cannot be ruled out that this is an incomplete list. The gin was initially distilled at the family-owned distillery based in London's Bloomsbury. In 1986, the brand was acquired by United Distillers, which is now owned by Diageo and produced at the Cameronbridge Distillery in Scotland. Tanqueray Malacca Gin debuted in 1998, based on a formula developed by Charles Waugh Tanqueray, the founder's son, who took over the company after his father's death in 1868. Charles Waugh travelled extensively, constantly searching for new botanicals. Malacca gin was inspired by a visit to the Malay Peninsula. We don't know the full formula, but it certainly included juniper berries, coriander, angelica root, cinnamon, licorice, nutmeg, cloves, chamomile flowers, and grapefruit and orange peel. Tanqueray Malacca was not a success and was withdrawn in 2001. It returned to the market in 2013 as a limited edition, and since 2018 it has been part of the core offer again.
Tanqueray Malacca is a nicely balanced gin, lime, grapefruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, a bit of licorice, and delicate notes of juniper in the background. We recommend serving it with premium tonic, a mint leaf and a few pink peppercorns. It tastes great in a Tom Collins cocktail.
