Product description
There is no question that Bowmore Distillery, founded in 1779, is the oldest distillery still in operation on Islay, but there is no evidence today that it was producing whisky before 1816, when a distilling licence was obtained by John Simpson.
In the 19th century Bowmore changed hands several times, in 1925 it was purchased by JB Sherriff & Company and remained in its assets for the next quarter of a century. Stanley P. Morrison acquired it in 1963 and until the mid-1970s offered Bowmore single malts in the so-called Sherriff's Series. The series consisted of an age-free edition, a 7-year-old, an 8-year-old and the now extremely rare 12- and 18-year-old. Its main buyer was Italy, at that time the most important market for single malts outside of its native Scotland.
Unfortunately, we were not able to taste any of the whiskies mentioned above; we read that they were unusual "old school" island malts – extremely complex, combining marine, mineral and smoke-peat notes with the sweetness of citrus fruits interwoven with the aroma of tarred ropes, petroleum, smoked fish and herbs.
