Product description
Colonel James E. Pepper, grandson of Elijah Pepper, who in 1812 built the distillery known today as Woodford Reserve, was one of the first Kentucky whiskey barons.
Colonel Pepper built a distillery in Lexington, and named his whiskey “Old 1776,” referring to recipes developed shortly after the American Revolution. The James E. Pepper brand disappeared from the market in 1958, only to return exactly half a century later, this time in the offer of Georgetown Trading Company, owned by Amir Peay, a collector of all things Pepper. The rye whiskey presented here comes from MGP Indiana, and its formula contains over 90% rye; since 2019, it has been bottled at 46% ABV (previously 50%). In 2017, Amir Peay resumed distilling at the rebuilt Old Pepper Distillery, hiring one of the MGP Indiana distillers as the master distiller.
