The Glenugie Distillery has a history of more lows than highs. Scotland’s most easterly distillery began life around 1831 as the Invernettie Distillery.
Over the years it has experienced more production breaks and changes of ownership than periods of prosperity. One of these was the 1950s when the plant, owned by Long John International, doubled the number of stills to four and produced malt spirits for the company's blends. The industry crisis of the early 1980s proved fatal for Glenugie and in 1983 the distillery distilled for the last time. Glenugie 1970 is a proposal from Gordon & MacPhail from 2012 in the prestigious Rare Old series (RO/12/03). The whisky was aged in a reclaimed hogshead cask made of white American oak.
Nose: quite rich, oranges, peaches, juniper berries, honey, maple syrup, dark chocolate, traces of anise and charred oak.
Taste: fruity with a delicate note of spice, oranges, raspberries, apples, grapefruits, pralines, cocoa, oak and a trace of cigar ash.
Finish: long and soft, fruity with a hint of dark chocolate and oak.
