Port Ellen Distillery produced whisky from 1825 to 1929. In 1967 it entered the final, 16-year period of its history.
At the time of its closure it was the smallest of three distilleries on Islay owned by DCL, with a potential of 1.7 million litres of alcohol per year. The property is now home to a large malting plant, Port Ellen Maltings, owned by Diageo. Port Ellen is, alongside Brora and to a lesser extent Rosebank, the most mourned closed distillery. Each year of the new century, the brand's owner (Diageo) offers a limited edition of Port Ellen in cask strength. 2009 saw the ninth release of this whisky, with 5916 bottles.
Aroma: quite strong fruity tones interwoven with smoky-peat, peaches, pears, shells and seaweed washed ashore, toffee, vanilla, pine nuts and light hospital notes.
Taste : perfect balance between fruit sweetness, sea breeze and peat smoke, lemon grass, pine needles and light mineral notes.
Finish: long and powerful, peat smoke, dry grass, bitter oak, notes of licorice and a pinch of spices.
