Auchentoshan Distillery, based near Glasgow, has been producing whisky since 1823. Since 1984, it has been owned by Morrison Bowmore, which in turn is fully controlled by the Japanese group Suntory.
Annual production is around 1.7 million liters of alcohol. The 1979 Vintage edition presented here, limited to 1,000 bottles, is an extraordinary whisky. Distilled on October 22, it spent over 32 years in Oloroso sherry casks. Bottled on July 20, 2012 in cask strength (50.5% abv) and without chill filtration.
Nose : very rich and elegant, blackberries, plums, raisins, candied orange peel, dark chocolate, roasted almonds, cedar cigar box and a hint of cinnamon.
Taste : fruity with a strong note of sherry, raisins, dried plums, figs and apricots, caramel, honey-roasted nuts, cinnamon and traces of nutmeg.
Finish: long and rather dry, tobacco, pepper, licorice and dark chocolate.
