Product description
Miltonduff Distillery (officially founded in 1824) is situated on the site of Pluscarden Abbey, which owned a brewery and probably a distillery as early as in the 13th Century.
In 1936 Miltonduff was purchased by Hiram Walker & Sons and soon became a major component of Ballantine blends. Currently the distillery is equipped with three pairs of stills and produces 5.8 million liters of spirit per annum. Almost entire output is used for blending and it doesn’t look that Chivas Bros, the distillery owners, are taking any effort to market Miltonduff as single malt. The 2005 Gordon & MacPhail bottling contains whisky distilled in 1968, when the distillery was still part of Hiram Walker & Sons and several years prior to major reconstruction, which almost tripled its capacity.
Nose: pretty strong sherry statement, Christmas cake, prunes, dried figs and apricots, raisins, vanilla, honey, almonds, touch of mint, hints of wax and peat.
Palate: rich, malty and nutty, slightly oily, heavy sherry notes, lots of dried fruit, honey, dark chocolate, touch of espresso, dash of pepper and charred oak.
Finish: long, with notes of sherry, oak, dried fruit and a whiff of smoke.
