There are three whisky powerhouses located at the southern shore of Islay – Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Laphroaig, with the latter just celebrated its 200th Anniversary.
The distillery was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, Alexander and Donald. It remained in the family hands until 1950s and currently it’s owned by Beam Suntory. Laphroaig is the most popular Islay single malt with annual sales over 3.2 million bottles. It is also the most “medicinal” whisky in the world. Here we got pretty unusual expression, 1989 Vintage bottled exclusively for Scandinavian market, a limited edition of 3500 bottles. The whisky was matured for 23 years exclusively in Spanish oak ex-sherry puncheons.
Nose: fantastic combination of sherry and peat, raisins, roasted almonds, prunes, dried figs, vanilla, hints of leather and tobacco, seaweed, traces of citrus zest.
Palate: vanilla custard shrouded in peat smoke, some sherry characteristics, honey roasted nuts, dried apricots, orange zest, pepper and pinch of salt.
Finish: long and peaty with subtle vanilla and honey sweetness, salted nuts and dash of cocoa.
