Product description
With global annual sales of 5.2 million cases (2022) Bombay is the third best-selling gin brand after Gordon’s (7.7 million) and Tanqueray (5.5 million).
The original recipe was created by Thomas Dakin in 1761, then it was reformulated several times. The brand name Bombay was launched in the 1960s when New York lawyer Alain Subin joined the drinks world. It was later acquired by IDV (then part of Grand Metropolitan) and since 1997 it has been owned by Bacardi Ltd, and produced at Laverstoke Mill, in rural Hampshire. Here is one of the most appealing expressions of the brand, Star of Bombay, named after one of the largest and most famous sapphires in the world (182 carats). It was found in Ceylon and since 1979 has been on display in Smithsonian Museum. There are 12 botanicals in the formula: juniper berries, licorice, cassia bark, coriander, grains of paradise, angelica root, orris root, almonds, cubeb berries, bergamot orange and ambrette seeds.
Star of Bombay is a very powerful gin, on the nose lots of juniper, pine needles, coriander, lemons and a dash of pepper. On the palate more pepper, some coriander and aniseed, lemon and orange peels and delicate floral notes. We recommend serving it in with premium tonic garnished with orange peel.
